1.1 Background of the Study
Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a significant social challenge in Nigeria, with both urban and rural areas experiencing high rates of abuse, particularly against women and girls. In Potiskum, Yobe State, where traditional values often intersect with modern issues, GBV continues to undermine social development (Mustapha & Yakubu, 2023). The role of films, especially Kannywood films, in raising awareness about GBV and influencing societal attitudes towards it is underexplored, especially in northern Nigeria (Suleiman & Ibrahim, 2024).
Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry, has a powerful reach in northern Nigeria, with millions of viewers regularly consuming its content. These films have the potential to challenge harmful gender stereotypes, promote positive gender relations, and raise awareness of sensitive issues such as GBV (Tijani & Mohammed, 2023). Through the depiction of characters experiencing or fighting against violence, Kannywood films can influence public discourse and offer solutions to mitigate GBV (Gusau & Ali, 2024). This study examines the role of Kannywood films in promoting GBV awareness in Potiskum, focusing on the effectiveness of these films in changing attitudes and behaviors toward gender-based violence.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the power of Kannywood films in shaping public perceptions, there is limited research on their potential impact on raising awareness of gender-based violence in Potiskum. This study seeks to fill that gap by examining how Kannywood films influence awareness and attitudes toward GBV in the community, with the aim of identifying how film can serve as a tool for social change in addressing violence against women (Bello, 2023).
